Koshimino (腰蓑)

A type of costume, a kilt of straw. It is used for roles of fishermen, hunters, people who draw seawater for salt production, and other lowly occupations. Standard ones are made of durable woven fibres such as ramie, with the lower part dyed indigo or brown. The one used in “Utou”, in which a bird hunter serves as shite, is a special type of kilt made up of several layers of actual bird feathers, called hamino or torimino.
