Shitagake (下掛け)

A flat silk string used to attach a wig for a female role, shitagake is used to keep the wig from coming apart. When tying the wig, the usual method is as follows: the upper half is adjusted, the middle of the cord placed between the eyebrows of the performer and tied behind the head; the bottom half is then adjusted and the string tied together with the wig at the back of the neck. Depending on the role, shitagake may not be used. The width of the silk piece is about 1.5 cm, and the length is about 160 cm. The colour is usually black, but the silk may also be coloured to match the wig.
