A Noh school of waki actors. The Shimogakari style was founded by Konparu Gonshichi Yūgen (d. 1692), a member of the Shundō school of waki actors that belonged to the Konparu school. To distinguish it from the Hōshō school of shite actors, it was called the Shimogakari Hoshō school, or “Shimo Hoshō”, “Shimohō” or “Waki Hōshō” for short. Since the Meiji era, various schools of waki actors have grown weaker, and it has become the largest waki school, based mainly in the Kantō area.
