One of the forms in Noh and kyōgen. The knee of one leg is placed on the floor, and the top of the opposite foot is also placed on the floor while the actor sits. The knee that is placed on the floor differs by school and role. At certain times the shitaniiru, literally “being low” is performed with the toes of both feet on the floor. As with other variable forms, the way the knees are opened, the chest is held and the tension held in the body may differ slightly by the type of role.
