A type of headwear worn mainly by actors in roles of male gods. Many of these ring-shaped crowns are made of metal or leather impressed with gold foil bearing elaborate openwork of arabesque or cloud designs. Depending on the role, which include dragons and foxes, a plaque representing the character may be set in the front of the crown. Another type of Wakanmuri, known as tenkan or tengan, worn for tennyo nymph roles, has delicate and graceful openwork with decorative yōraku ornamental beaded tassels hanging from the sides.
