A vocal technique of vibrating a low-pitched voice for decorative purposes, Yuri consists of hon-yuri, han-yuri, mitsu-yuri and more subtle types that accentuate the utai, or vocals. A melody played by flute in hon-yuri is also called Yuri. Other types include a unique technique of delicately vibrating the voice in kyōgen kouta, the folk songs of kyōgen.
