A type of costume used in kyōgen, Monpa are stuffed animal suits for animal roles. The costume covers the whole body of the actor and usually consists of a pair of matching top and bottom with gloves and tabi socks. Monpafor monkeys, dogs, horses, cows and crabs are made of cotton. The suits for foxes and raccoons take time and effort, with thick coats of dyed silk thread painstakingly stitched to the linen fabric.
