Among the Noh plays in which the shite plays a hunter or fisherman, the three pieces “Akogi”, “Ukai” and “Utō” (known as the San-hisen), portray these characters as guilty of killing for a living and suffering in hell after death. In “Ukai”, the demon of hell rescues the fisherman, but the other two pieces, “Akogi” and “Utō”, are particularly gruesome, depicting continuing torment amd suffering to the end.
